A new pedestrian bridge is set to be added near the iconic Canton Tower, providing another scenic crossing over the Pearl River. This follows the success of Haixin Bridge, Guangzhou’s first pedestrian bridge connecting both sides of the river, which has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists since its opening three years ago.
On May 14, 2024, the design bidding process began for the Huangpuyong River Pedestrian Bridge, part of the Yuejiang Road (Guangzhou Avenue to Liede Avenue) Quality Improvement Project. The new bridge will span approximately 280 meters, crossing the Huangpuyong River from east to west. The planned pedestrian bridge will not only connect the interrupted sections of the riverside greenways, but also allow people walking on it to admire the ecological riverfront.
The research area for the Huangpuyong River Pedestrian Bridge project is located to the west of the Yuejiang Road greenway demonstration section, between the southern sections of Guangzhou Bridge and Liede Bridge. The proposed bridge will span the mouth of the Huangpuyong River, with the Pearl River to the north and Yuejiang Road to the south, extending approximately 280 meters from east to west across the Huangpuyong River. This bridge will enhance the waterfront environment and connectivity of the greenway between the southern sections of Guangzhou Bridge and Liede Bridge, further improving the surroundings of Canton Tower and its tourism facilities.
The bridge's design features a circular layout with a radius of 534.25 meters, and its width ranges from 11 meters at its narrowest point to 26.7 meters at its widest. It will include separate pathways for slow and fast pedestrian traffic, with a leisure walkway on the north side and a faster lane on the south side, separated by a cable-stayed arch. The bridge’s outline on both the east and the west banks will seamlessly connect with the shoreline, aligning with the flow of pedestrian traffic along the Pearl River.
Key highlights of the bridge include widened sections at the main pier to create viewing platforms and leisure areas, integrating lightweight, low-maintenance greenery to provide a pleasant space for walking, jogging, and sightseeing. The central part of the bridge will feature seating steps and landscaped flower beds, enhancing the visual appeal and user experience.
The project aims to address current and future traffic needs through minimal but impactful modifications, creating a comfortable and ecological walking environment. It will offer multiple vantage points and contribute to a vibrant, world-class waterfront along the river.
