The Chinese version of the award-winning play "The Pillowman" will be performed at Guangzhou Opera House on February 4 to 5, 2023.

The play is based on the work of Irish-British playwright Martin McDonagh, who is famous for his dark humor and integrates cruelty and healing moments in his works. It tells the story of the writer Katurian who is interrogated about the gruesome plots of his novel when he is accused of serial murders, as the scenes are very similar to several child murders occurring in his town. Ten dark fairy tales are told through Katurian during the play, and "The Pillowman" is one of them.

Presented by DrumTower West Theatre, the Chinese version of "The Pillowman" has been performed for eight years and gained wide popularity. Shi Hang, the producer of the drama, used to say that he wants audiences to find brightness in darkness when they watch the play. "McDonagh is good at writing about 'evil people,' but he always manages to display tiny but shining aspects in their personalities," said Shi.
"Every character can be a source of light on the dark theatrical setting." Shi believes that a dark fairy tale is like a huge dark curtain covering the sky, while the little positive aspects of human nature are the stars. "Only in the darkness can very weak light become conspicuous and precious. Dark fairy tales provide a different angle to observe humanity."
